Self-healing concrete is a type of concrete that can fix cracks on its own. It can also be called self-repairing concrete.

Self healing concrete was Invented by Henk Jonkers, a microbiologist professor at Delft University of Technology 2006.

How it works:

Concrete chemical products react with water and carbon dioxide to form a solid that seals cracks.

Types of self healing concrete:

Self-healing concretes can be classified into two categories: autogenous self-healing and autonomous self-healing. The autogenous self-healing concretes mainly rely on continuous hydration reaction to accomplish the damage repair, leading to their development and application being limited by the extremely long time and suitable conditions

Benefits of self healing concrete over traditional concrete:

The Self-healing ability of concrete, cementitious materials or geopolymers can be performed by using calcium hydroxide.

Self-healing concrete extend the life of concrete structures. They restore the mechanical properties of structural elements and prevent water and aggressive ions from penetrating the concrete

Other factors include:

Age: The healing capacity of concrete decreases with age.
Crack size: The time it takes for concrete to self-heal depends on the size of the crack.

Healing agents
Capsules containing healing agents can be added to concrete. When cracks appear, the capsules release the healing agent.

Generally speaking Self-healing concretes (or self-repairing concretes) are smart concretes that can repair internal cracks by themselves.
